Most people struggle with stubborn fat that resists even the strictest diet and exercise regimes. But, when it comes to fat reduction treatments, it can be difficult to know which technique best suits your needs.
CoolSculpting is gaining popularity as a non-surgical treatment that is performed as a means of getting rid of unwanted fat. In fact, the procedure has been performed in over 70 countries around the world, and the team at Fiori Institute of Skin and Body has treated more than 2000 patients so far.
But is it really effective? We take a look at the science behind this fat loss technique, what the procedure involves, and how it really works.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting involves a process known as cryolipolysis, in which fat is frozen and destroyed. Fat cells are then naturally eliminated from the body. One of the advantages of this technique is that the cold targets fat cells very precisely, without actually damaging any of the surrounding skin or tissue. When the body flushes out the dead cells, 20-25% of these cells are permanently eliminated, leaving the target area more sculpted and shaped than before.
How does the procedure work?
First, you will meet with one of our specially trained dermal therapists for a consultation, where together you will decide on the areas you would like treated — CoolSculpting can be performed on most areas of the body e.g. the inner and outer thighs, abdomen, sides, back, arms and under the chin. We will advise you on the best treatment for your particular needs and discuss which areas of the body you would most like to eliminate excess fat. Because everyone’s body is different, it’s important that your treatment plan is customised to your personal goals.
With the use of a gel pad and an applicator, controlled cooling is applied very precisely to your area of choice, targeting the fat cells under the surface of the skin. These cells are frozen, allowing the body to naturally flush them out. Each session lasts 35 to 60 minutes depending on the applicator used.
Is the procedure effective?
When one loses weight, fat cells shrink, but the number of fat cells remains the same. During CoolSculpting, however, the fat cells are essentially killed and then flushed from your system, which means that the number of fat cells in your body are greatly reduced.
Most of our patients start to see results from 4 – 6 weeks, with optimal results, achieved 12 – 14 weeks after the procedure. Your dermal therapist will advise you of the optimal number of treatment cycles recommended, based on your goals and expectations. Your therapist will also recommend the correct size applicator for your needs — we have a number of applicators available at Fiori Institute of Skin and Body to ensure that any problem area can be precisely targeted.
The CoolSculpting technique is an effective option if you have specific areas you would like to focus on when it comes to fat reduction, particularly if you find that certain areas of your body are resistant to diet and exercise (stubborn fat pockets). Because it is non-invasive, there is generally no recovery time and you will be able to return to your normal activities immediately after your treatment. Side-effects are very rare, but your dermal therapist will let you know what to expect during and after the treatment.
